Memebox Review – Special #60: Oil Therapy

This is another box where I’m not blown away by the contents because I can think of so many other items that could have been put in that weren’t. I need to stop having any expectations whatsoever. I really like the products in here, I was just hoping for different ones.

Contrary to popular opinion, using oils won’t make your skin extra oily. In fact, your skin produces extra oil when it’s dry, so using oil to hydrate helps to regulate the amount of sebum your skin naturally produces.

Fun fact: whenever I use oils, my dog decides I taste like heaven and licks me incessantly. So I’ll rate these products with Gabs slurps. 🙂

Holika Holika Pig-Nose Clear Blackhead Deep Cleansing Oil Balm (25g)
One of H2’s cult favorites, this deep cleansing balm goes on as a solid balm and transforms into a silky oil that effortlessly dissolves blackheads, oil, and impurities. Its non-greasy, non-drying formula cleanses thoroughly and rinses off completely. Plus, pink clay removes blackheads deep within the pores, lemon extracts clarify and smooth out the skin’s surface, and aloe vera leaf extracts soothe inflamed skin and shrink enlarged pores. Take a small amount and softly massage over blackhead-prone parts of your face, then rinse off with lukewarm water.

oilpignose

Let’s talk about blackheads for a minute. A comedo (hair follicule clogged with keratin from your skin, bacteria, oil, and/or crud) can be closed — a whitehead — or open so you can see the dirt. The open comedo is a blackhead. They’re usually raised and inflamed, and can become infected if you pick at them (as I tend to do). The little black dots on the top of most people’s noses are actually sebaceous filaments, which are pathways for oil to travel from the follicle up to the surface of the skin and out of the body, like a candle wick. You don’t really want to be rid of those, because if you try to express them out, your skin will just regrow them and produce more oil. We see them because sebum turns dark when exposed to air, and the filaments expose the sebum in your pores to air.

This product behaves much like the well-loved Banila Co. Cleanse It Zero — a balm-style cleanser that melts into an oil when it heats up next to your skin. While it’s marketed for blackheads, the H2 balm can probably be used for your whole face just like the Cleanse It Zero. I’m using the Banila balm right now, but I think I’ll take the H2 with me when I travel for the holidays, since it’s a little more portable than the big tub of Cleanse It Zero.

Verdict: five slurps! Dog, get off me!

ProYou Eucalyptus (10mL)
Eucalyptus essential oil can be added to creams, toners, or wash off packs to treat skin irritations and preserve a youthful appearance.

oileucalyptus

Do not — DO NOT — put eucalyptus oil directly on your skin. It’s an irritant, and it’s just going to redden your skin. I’ve been adding several drops of this oil into my bath to perfume the water and make my skin softer after soaking.

Verdict: four slurps…four thousand actual slurps from Gabranth, who also tried to drink the bathwater.

Cheek Room Lip & Eye Makeup Remover (100mL)
A moisturizing makeup remover with dual layers of cyclomethicone and rose water that quickly and easily removes all traces of waterproof and stubborn eye makeup and lipstick. This formula is extremely gentle on skin and leaves sensitive skin around eyes and lips moist and soft after makeup removal. Rinse off with lukewarm water after wiping off makeup with a cotton pad soaked in the formula.

oilremover

While I hate Cheek Room’s packaging — I just find the pinup girl tacky — I find that makeup removers that have layers of water and oil as this one does seem to work better than those that don’t. You can see from this picture how the layers have separated; you shake it up before you use it. It removes makeup without extra scrubbing, even stubborn waterproof mascara, but it does leave a greasy film, so I use it first and then continue with washing my face.

Verdict: five slurps and an eaten used cotton ball. Get out of my trash can, Gabs!

Migabee Verbena Oil Serum (30mL)
Specially formulated for the face and neck, it’s a non-greasy, naturally soothing, brightening, and anti-aging supporting treatment. It provides intense hydration, protection, and rejuvenation to reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles for soft, radiant skin. Suitable for all skin types. Apply directly over a clean face and pat in, or mix with foundation or BB/CC cream.

oilserum

I love the lemony smell of verbena. It just smells so bright and clean to me. I can’t tell if this serum is actually doing anything because I use a variety of products, and I haven’t used this one long enough, but I like it so far. I tap it on after moisturizer, as oils go on after creams to help lock in moisture.

Verdict: five slurps and a sneeze from the verbena. See what happens when you lick my face, dog?

Bobbish Luminous Body & Facial Mist (100g)
Formulated with hydrating argan oil, this non-greasy, light micro-mist penetrates quickly and deeply. Powerful skin-loving ingredients send moisture deep into the skin and calm its surface. Spray all over face, under or over makeup, and body as often as needed. To be used within 1 year of unsealing the product.

oilmist

Argan oil is like a wonder-oil, full of benefits for your skin, hair, and nails. I’m not sure that I’d use this throughout the day unless my face were bare and/or I felt really dry. Otherwise, I’ll use it in the evening to hydrate my face when the heater dries out my skin.

Verdict: four slurps and a nap. Lazy dog.

ProYou Aroma Vita Oil (165mL)
A luxurious blend of vita complex, camellia oil, and jojoba oil to soothe and rejuvenate your face and body. This aromatic formula will leave skin super soft, supple, and clarified. It’s suitable for all skin types. Gently massage the oil over skin, blend into bath water, or apply after shower.

oilbody

Camillia and jojoba oil are great for clearing and hydrating skin, but this oil is too heavy to use on my face. I’m using it on my damp skin after I shower to lock in moisture all day. It absorbs relatively quickly, but it’s definitely not something you put on and then jump into a silk blouse.

Verdict: five sluuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuurrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrppppppppppsssssss. And now I need another shower.

Not a box to excite me, really, despite liking all the products. There are too many oils with similar purposes here, instead of, like, cleaning oils or hair oils. I think there could have been more variety with products, but I can find a use for everything I received, so overall I’m okay with this box.

Memebox just released a winter masks box, but I don’t have any codes this month that would apply to it, since it’s under $30. As usual, you can automatically get $5 off orders over $100 or $10 off orders over $150 by using my link.

All links and codes on this page are affiliate links, for which I receive commission. All products featured in this review were purchased by me. Box graphic by Memebox, all other pictures taken by me.
