As I’ve mentioned before, Asian standards of beauty primarily involve clear, pale, blemish-free skin. Historically, that was a sign of wealth and status, so almost all Korean skin care products contain ingredients to “whiten” skin. They’re not meant to bleach away pigment as much as they brighten and even tone.
I jumped on this chocolate-themed box so fast I’m amazed I didn’t burst into flames from the air friction.

Autumn is my favorite time of year, despite the start of school. I love the cool crispness of the air, the scents of maple, apple, cinnamon, and caramel. And I love the rich warm hues of autumn most of all.

The story goes that women working in a sake factory noticed that their hands remained smooth and soft through the years from being immersed in the fermenting yeast all the time. That’s likely an apocryphal tale, but new research shows that fermentation does assist in anti-aging products. High-end lines like SK-II use fermented sake, while its mid-price dupe Missha uses fermented beer. I drink a lot of hard cider, so I’m fermenting from the stomach out; why not try it on my face?

The Asian routine involves serious cleansing as the first step. I double cleanse: first with an oil cleanser to dissolve makeup, then a foaming cleanser to get every trace of crud off my face. I’ve noticed since I started doing this that my skin is much happier with me. If there’s one cardinal rule of beauty, it’s to never go to bed with makeup on! Shark Week used to be the highlight of my summer, but that’s when Discovery used to show actual science instead of dramatizations of mythical creatures. Still, I love sharks, so I thought about using blue and grey as my manicure colors this week.
